Issues which limit the number of files in an HP3000 Group

If you have 'too many files in a group' OR 'too many files with a similar name' then you will start having problems when trying to delete some of them.

I use a modified version of MPEX's flexible %LISTF file REPORT.LISTF.VECSL to warn me when we are approaching the 'too many files in a group' limit.

afaik, there is no 'hard' limit...it's one of those 'it depends' sort of things. however, when you get into the 40k-50k range, you're on thin ice.

you can pick up a copy of filecnt from jazz... http://jazz.external.hp.com/src/scripts/FILECNT .....and not reinvent the wheel smile

fwiw, i run this script in a weekly job with a threshold of 20k -- as my early warning system smile i've told the programmers at 25k they start getting emails and trouble tickets...at 30k and if there's still no response, i start getting rid of files.

btw, if you find yourself in this situation (and you're on the low-end of having too many files) you can try getting rid of the files backwards. (eg, purge 'z' then 'y' then 'x'...) if you're really in trouble, the only thing (that i know of) to be done is to purge the group/directory.

btw #2, this isn't a problem unique to mpe. you can have the same sort of problem on unix....

i hit this 'too many files' problem several years ago....ended up having to reload a 200-250gb system as a result. it's not the kind of 'fun' i wish to have again...
