EMC Disc Arrays on the HP3000

It is really very simple, assuming the EMC is correctly configured. At boot up run

ODE << Offline diagnostics environment MAPPER

Then configure the ldev (drives/LUNS) with the device id SYMMETRIX

And for any array configured onto the hp e3000, the id HPDARRAY can also be used in SYSGEN. Of course support is thru EMC with very specific support coming from HP and of course performance is dictated by your application's I/O characteristics and EMC's configuration specifics. You might want to read an old white paper I did back in 1997.

I think the ID should be SYMMETRIX, as from our configuration Do not believe that HPDARRAY will function properly.

--RobertSchlosser?

Without giving too many secrets away. the HPDARRAY was inserted into MPE around release 5.5 to allow a number of array technologies to come to fruition without us (MPE lab guys) having to develop new IDs for each and every array on our horizon.

The SYMMETRIX and HPDARRAY IDs expect the same behavior from the array as specified in a document agreed upon by both parties many moons ago and hasn't change much since. That document spelled out which SCSI features are to be implemented and functional and the behavior of the array during certain operations.

So in short, HPDARRAY does work but SYMMETRIX is more esthetically correct when using that array on an HP e3000.
